How Ukraine fights corruption – commentary by Daria Kaleniuk

Issues of corruption in Ukraine were discussed at the current Munich Security Conference. Kaleniuk noted that this is unusual for a conference, because until a few years ago, corruption was not associated with threats to national security.

Issues of strategic corruption

At the Munich Conference, in particular, they talked about strategic corruption and its threats to national security. Strategic corruption consists in the use by authoritarian countries of various instruments of corruption in order to buy Western politicians and the opinions of Western societies through their propaganda, the expert explained.

In particular, they talked about how to “catch” these funds, control their flow, how to counteract the legalization of proceeds from crime.

Corruption in Ukraine is less tolerated

Kalinyuk said that in Munich, issues of corruption in Ukraine were discussed at closed meetings. Ukrainian representatives reported that corruption has not disappeared, but the positive is that corruption is now much less tolerated, especially in the defense sector.

added the expert.

She noted that the IMF mission in Ukraine is ending, the next tranche will be agreed one of these days, which will also contain anti-corruption requirements for Ukraine.

Importance of Anti-Corruption Policy

Kaleniuk stressed that Ukraine will not be able to become a member of the European Union if it does not move forward in anti-corruption reforms, if it does not resume electronic declarations, if it does not adopt a successful law on the Constitutional Court.

added the speaker.

She stressed that Western leaders depend on the opinion of their citizens. While the majority of American and German citizens support Ukraine and are ready to endure certain economic consequences from sanctions in order to help Ukraine win.

Anti-corruption policy of Ukraine: latest

  • On January 23, NABU and SAP reported that they were investigating possible abuses in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and opened criminal proceedings. It is known that NABU and SAPO have begun investigating their own developments.
