The Ochsenfurt Main Clinic has now been in the corona-restricted operating mode for more than three months. We launched the first protective measures two weeks before the orders from the state government, CEO Christian Schell told SPD MP Sabine Dittmar from the Bundestag and Volkmar Halbleib from the state parliament, it said in a press release.
The health policy spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag and her colleague from the state of Ochsenfurt had come to discuss the problems and challenges for clinics in Corona times. In addition to Schell, the deputies were welcomed by the two KU board members Alexander Schraml and Eva von Vietinghoff-Scheel and the Wrzburg district administrator Thomas Eberth.
The representatives of the district praised the willingness to cooperate and the cooperation with other clinics and hospitals as well as private nursing facilities in the region. In addition to caring for corona patients and implementing protective measures, this also included help in the event of bottlenecks in protective equipment. We want to maintain and maintain this intensive cooperation after the corona pandemic, Schraml made clear.
Clinic treats around 25 Covid-19 patients
Christian Schell praised the employees of the clinic’s behavior during the Corona period. Smaller renovation and training measures have largely reduced the risk of infection within the Main Clinic. The clinic treated about 25 Covid-19 patients, around a third of them in the intensive care unit. However, divergent quarantine requirements for clinicians from different counties caused difficulties. In addition, there are still some questions regarding the assumption of costs from federal funds. SPD health expert Dittmar agreed to help and support.
The clinic is currently back in normal operation and all desired treatments could be carried out again. According to managing director Schell, the lesson from Corona is above all to reserve more storage capacity for protective material. However, the necessary space is currently not being adequately funded in the comprehensive general hospital renovation that is scheduled for autumn 2020.
County and clinic set up nursing school
In addition to the current questions about the corona pandemic, the focus was on the future development of the Main Clinic and the health location at Greinberg in Ochsenfurt. With 140 beds, 7,000 patients, 3,000 procedures and 15,000 outpatient contacts, the clinic is very well positioned, the deputies said.
It is particularly gratifying for Dittmar and Halbleib that the clinic and district are currently setting up their own nursing school. Preparations are currently being made on Greinberg. It will initially be housed in the currently empty Curvita wing in the Main Clinic.
Vietinghoff-Scheel said that they are currently in contact with private nursing homes to create a good basis for cooperation. In addition, close cooperation with the vocational school in Ochsenfurt is sought. This is the right step at the right time to train more nurses. so Dittmar and Halbleib agree.
Medical Care Center Considerations
With a view to the standby practice that has been closed since August 2019, Sabine Dittmar informed about the current status at federal level. A legal regulation for so-called integrated emergency centers is discussed there. Schraml pointed out that negotiations are currently underway with the statutory health insurance association to take over medical emergency care. Clinic management as well as political mandate holders agreed to keep a close eye on these options for reopening standby practice. The standby practice is important for the health location Ochsenfurt and the southern district of Wrzburg, according to Halbleib. He and Dittmar also support considerations for the district’s establishment of a medical care center in order to close gaps in outpatient primary care that cannot be permanently closed by resident doctors in rural areas.
