How to make a statue

According to Sue Nicholson in the book Make a Statue (2007), here are the steps in making sculptures from clay:

• Making the main ingredients and preparing the tools needed

The main ingredient is using clay that has been cleaned of dirt, such as grass, stones or gravel. In addition, prepare supporting tools, such as knives, cutting ropes or other tools needed.

• Mix the clay with water little by little

After preparing the equipment and cleaning the clay, the process of making the statue can begin. The method is to mix water into the clay, little by little as needed.

When mixing water into the clay, try not to use too much or too little. Because if there is too much water, the clay will have a soft texture. Meanwhile, if there is too little water, the texture of the clay will harden and be difficult to shape.

• The process of forming the statue as desired

The next way is to start the process of forming the statue as desired. For the technique, you can use the printing technique or the sculpture or the grain technique, namely by massaging the clay.

The whole process of forming this statue must be accompanied by slowly adding and subtracting clay. Continue shaping the statue until the desired result.

• The process of drying and burning clay statues

After being formed, the clay statue can be dried in the sun for two to three days, according to the needs and condition of the statue. For the drying process, try not to be in a place that is damp or exposed to water, because the statue can turn soft again when exposed to water.

In order for the results to be stronger and not easily destroyed, clay statues must be burned. The combustion tool uses a burning stove. The temperature can be adjusted to the texture of the statue after drying it in the sun.

If the texture is hard enough, then the temperature shouldn’t be too high, so it won’t break or get damaged. Meanwhile, if the texture is still a little soft, try not to get the temperature too low, so that the statue is hardened and stronger.
