How to Identify Counterfeit Equipment: A Guide for Medical Professionals and Consumers

There is always a threat of purchasing counterfeit equipment, but how exactly is it different from the original? Technologies used in medicine can help with this.

John Bruner is head of marketing at Lumafield, a manufacturer of equipment specializing in CT scanners for engineers. transmits Business Insider. He shared several photos on X showing CT scans of a real pair of AirPods Pro, comparing them with fakes.

Lumafield analyzed some key differences between the batteries, circuitry, and overall quality of real and fake AirPods Pro.

According to marketer Lumafield, real AirPods have tiny batteries. Fake AirPods have larger batteries that may be less safe. The batteries shape the earbud, making it slightly bulkier and potentially less comfortable.

The wiring inside real AirPods is much more complex and takes up all the internal space. According to Bruner, fake AirPods have more cavities.

Fake AirPods have fewer microphones, making it difficult for them to achieve comparable recorded sound quality. Other criticisms include limited wireless charging capabilities and a lack of magnets securing the AirPods to the charging case.

So how can you be sure that AirPods are original? There are several ways to check.

Users can log into Apple’s website Check Coverage and enter the AirPods serial number on the charging case. This site is used to check product warranty. If it says it can’t verify warranty coverage for the serial number you entered, it likely means the pair is a fake.

Check your AirPods packaging for grammatical or spelling errors. The AirPods should also connect to the Find My app when you connect them to your phone. We previously wrote about the experience of a Kiev resident who was lucky enough to buy a high-quality fake AirPods Pro on OLX.
