How to Easily Clean Your Air Fryer and Deep Fryer

The airfryer is ideal for a tasty snack or to prepare dinner. The only annoying thing about the kitchen appliance is cleaning it. But not if it depends on cleaning guru Marja Middeldorp. She explains how you can easily clean the air fryer and deep fryer.

“The airfryer is known as a device that does not need much cleaning,” says the cleaning specialist. “But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to clean the device, of course.” How do you do that? “There are different brands, but some individual parts can easily be put in the dishwasher. Be sure to do that to make it easier on yourself. If a manufacturer says it can be done, then it can be done.”

Immediately after use

“Don’t wait too long to clean this device,” she continues. “Make it a habit to do it immediately after use. A piece of bitterbal or a piece of salmon left behind will start to smell. Remove it with a soft sponge , of which you always use the soft side. Otherwise you will damage the device. And for the same reason never use abrasives.”

With a very small amount of the ‘Marja soap’ – warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid – you can remove the remains from the airfryer. “I like to use that yellow, recycled paper. Better for the environment, saves on price, and it absorbs moisture and dirt well.”

Bad odors

If, even after a thorough cleaning, a dirty smell still escapes, Marja has a tip for that too. “Take a piece of aluminum foil, some warm water and a few slices of lemon. Place the foil on the bottom and preheat the device to 180 degrees. After fifteen minutes, switch off the device again. All the fat then automatically slides down. You remove the foil with fat, you then have to take the fryer out and let it dry well.”

Turn on the fryer at 90 degrees and then throw in a washing-up tablet.

Do you also get the deep fryer clean?

And then: one of the predecessors of the air fryer, but still popular: the deep fryer. “Take out the fat and turn on the appliance with water in it. Leave the net in. Turn on the fryer at 90 degrees. That’s really important. You then throw in a washing-up tablet. If the temperature is too high, it will foam and can get on your plug. Then you can get a short circuit. So don’t put it above a hundred degrees, it should absolutely not boil!

The tablet then dissolves and you still remove the plug to prevent a short circuit. After fifteen minutes you can remove the basket. “Sheets with fats and oil are then attached to it. You can pull out a whole string that way. Rinse the basket and put it back in.”

Marja also has a final tip against a bad oil smell, or if you want to fry fries after fish that don’t taste like fish sticks. “Put some stale bread in the oil. That neutralizes and sucks out the taste.”
