I heard last time I went to Qatar. These are the words spoken to me when a woman from Ernakulam district who works in a hospital there brought her son to see my daughter who is a speech therapist who runs her own clinic in Doha. Successful completion of BASLP (Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology) course and registration with RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India). It is one of the few paramedical courses where those who have taken science group without biology in Plus Two can join.

How long to study?

While it takes four and a half years to complete degree courses in rehabilitation fields like physiotherapy and occupational therapy, BASLP can be completed in four years including one year of internship.

What do they do?

BASLP is a detailed study of human hearing and speech systems, their disorders and remedies. The aim of this course is to equip people with the skills and abilities to work effectively not only with children but also with people of all ages who have communication disabilities.

Those who have completed this course can work not only as speech language pathologists who scientifically assess and intervene to solve problems such as speech disorders such as Vick, dyslexia, difficulties in swallowing, etc.

Where is the job?

There are many job opportunities in hospitals, special schools, child development centers, speech and hearing institutes, hearing aid factories, government and non-government agencies helping the disabled, research centers and child guidance centers. Also, those who are academically interested can become college teachers and engage in research after completing their post-graduation.

There are great opportunities in UK, Western Europe, USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, USA etc. Some countries require at least a master’s degree for clinical practice. Opportunities for audiology and speech clinics and home delivery services as a self-employment venture are huge today.

For those interested in further studies, Master of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (MASLP), MSc in Speech and Hearing, MSc in Audiology and PhD programs are also available in various institutions. Also there are opportunities for PG Diploma courses in Forensic Science, Linguistics etc.
