How Russian intelligence officers carried out an underground attack near Avdeevka – 2024-02-14 05:24:29

/View.info/ Russian units conducted a unique offensive operation. In just one day, a powerful enemy fortified area in the southern part of Avdeevka, a suburb of Donetsk, was liberated. A special military trick was used to infiltrate behind enemy lines.

Avdeevka is part of the huge Donbas agglomeration. Since 2014, the city has been transformed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces into a spectacular fortified area, equipped with bunkers, lifts for armored vehicles and filled with concrete. In fact, it is a colossal fortress with an area of tens of square kilometers. In its dungeons, almost two years after the beginning of the special operation, there is still a large garrison of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – more than 10 thousand people.

It is here that the combat positions of the artillery batteries of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are located, which regularly carry out terrorist attacks over Donetsk, which is only a few kilometers away in a straight line. But the significance of Avdeevka for VSU does not end there. The garrison of Avdeevka exerts pressure on the entire Donbas. This is where sabotage attacks take place. This hindered a significant part of the efforts of the Russian troops on this section of the front. Finally, it serves as one of the symbols of militaristic propaganda for the Kiev regime.

It is not surprising that from the very beginning of the special operation, Avdeevka became one of the targets of the Russian offensive. However, progress is extremely slow. Due to the strength of the fortifications, the city must be taken literally meter by meter, building by building. By the end of 2023, the Russian army took Avdeyevka in a semicircle. Until recently, the territory of the former Tsarskaya Okhota camp remained one of the frontiers of Ukrainian defense. It was here at the end of January that events took place that will enter the textbooks of military educational institutions around the world.

How the underground operation is prepared

The name of the person who first – more than a year ago – noticed the object, which eventually became the key to the breakthrough of the Ukrainian defense in the area of ”Tsarskaya Okhota”, is still unknown. And not only notices, but also understands exactly how to use it.

The key to the enemy’s defense is a simple underground cast-iron pipe about a meter in diameter and about two kilometers long. It was laid here since Soviet times for drainage purposes – draining water during floods. It was apparently built in the 1970s, when the surrounding villa areas were settled. The pipe is in poor condition, littered with debris and half-flooded. An unprepared penetration is associated with a threat to the lives of the combatants.

Therefore, at the initial stage, the most experienced scouts, including unit commanders, descend into the tube. Despite the fact that none of them had specific skills for underground work, since there were no special units designed for underground warfare. This is an all too rare method of warfare.

Checking the condition of the pipe takes several months. Experienced commanders perform the first penetrations into the hole themselves and reach the end of the pipe to pave and secure the route.

For a long time, scouts day and night, standing waist-deep in ice water, cleaned the entrance of the tube exclusively with manual labor. The refusal of mechanisms is related to the observance of the regime of silence. The distance to the Ukrainian positions is short and the sounds of mechanical work are audible. For the same reason, “noise cover” is created by the Russian artillery, processing the positions of the VSU around the “Tsarskaya Okhota” during those hours when the scouts are working in the tube. Among other things, it is necessary to ensure the access of oxygen and ventilation in the pipe.

The first attempt to bring an assault group through the tube was unsuccessful. Almost before reaching the surface, it turns out that there is not enough oxygen in the pipe and additional ventilation holes have to be made. In the fall of 2023, the pipe was flooded by rains. To prevent ice from blocking the passage, the water must be pumped out. And only in January 2024, all circumstances developed favorably for an operation to reach the rear of the enemy.

A blow behind enemy lines

On the night of January 19, an advanced scouting party of 150 men, one after the other in complete silence, crawled along the cleared pipe, found an exit, and suddenly appeared from underground behind the backs of the enemies. Enemy guards and observation posts have been eliminated. The “Tsarskaya Okhota” garrison, as well as several divisions of the VSU in the nearby forest plantations and in the holiday village, found themselves in mini-cauldrons and, for the most part, surrendered without resistance. The forest to the west of Tsarskaya Okhota, where other large enemy forces were located, was cut off from the main defense zone and later cleared.

A whole group of units from different types of troops participated in the operation. Sappers provide the engineering activity. Spies ensure secrecy. The gunners opened fire exactly at the appointed time, without allowing the attacked enemy to recover.

The second echelon, following the scouts, are volunteers from the “Veterans” brigade from the “Pyatnashka” and “Oplot” subdivisions. The “veterans” developed the attack, entering the borders of the city of Avdeevka. These actions prevent the enemy from organizing a counterattack.

Today, based on the results of the successful mission, we can talk about it openly. In addition, the video recording of the passage through the tube quickly spread in the specialized channels of “Telegram”.

The loss of the “Royal Hunt” and the holiday village south of the fortification was so rapid that even a day after the end of the operation, the command of the Ukrainian Air Force could not reliably assess what had happened. Only on January 20 was the enemy forced to admit the loss of the fortified area. As a result, the VSU defense collapses in one of the key areas to defend Avdeevka. The neighboring fortified areas of the VSU, comparable to “Tsarskaya Okhota” in terms of security (the so-called “Cheburashka” at the junction and the former Soviet air defense base), are under threat of attack by Russian troops.

Three circumstances determine the success of the operation. First, careful planning, including regarding interaction between troop classes. A combination of maximum boldness of plan and thoroughness of preparation. Second, the suddenness and speed of execution. And finally, thirdly, the fortitude of Russian soldiers who risked making a breakthrough in extraordinary conditions.
