How fumigations and vinegar can help against the Coronavirus: not a cure, but a useful ally

An old grandmother’s remedy, but which in the scientific literature actually finds several proofs of effectiveness against viruses. A study coordinated by Dr. Luca Pianta, head of Otolaryngology at the Cremona hospital, demonstrates how it could also help eliminate SARS-Cov-2 from the upper airways faster. Of course, alongside the medications that your doctor may prescribe for you.

Do you remember when you had a cold as a child and your grandmother put a pot of hot water in front of you? They were the famous fumigations, which today you will tend to use a little less. But this very old and ever-present remedy could represent one of the (few) weapons we currently have for counteract Covid-19. Of course, if used correctly. Attention, we are not talking about a cure against infection, but of a therapeutic strategy that can help you negativize yourself earlier or protect yourself, in case you have already come into contact with a positive. We talked about it with Dr. Luca Pianta, head of Otolaryngology of the Cremona hospital, which he created a study published in European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology in collaboration with the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.

In the literature there are several studies that show that the pathogens that belong to the coronavirus family, therefore also those that cause SARS and MERS, are heat sensitive – explains the doctor. – That is, it means that at certain temperatures they lose their ability to infect. Specifically, we are talking about an inclusive heat between 45 and 55 degrees“.

The water you put to boil reaches a temperature of 100 degrees, which will drop to 60 once poured into the container you will use for the fumigations. At this point you will have to wait a few more minutes, until it reaches 55 degrees. Exactly the level needed to put the virus in trouble. “To be able to inactivate SARS-Cov-2, it will take at least 15 minutes of deep vapor breaths – , specifies Dr. Plant. – If we also add a targeted solution to the water, this remedy could be even more effective. In the study we published, we experimented acetic acid, or vinegar, at a concentration of 0.3%. We have seen that after the fumigations the infectivity was halved and with the addition of acetic acid the reduction was 90%“.

Acetic acid – adds – comes used for centuries as a disinfectant and still today in the food industry it is used to prevent fungal, bacterial or viral overlapping on foods that are stored in warehouses. There are studies that show that concentrations between 1% and 3% of wine vinegar are able to inactivate viruses present on surfaces, including coronaviruses.“.

You cannot use vinegar that you buy at the supermarket, you need what you find in the pharmacy

In fact, I remind you that SARS-Cov-2 is part of a larger family of coronaviruses, within which we also find four with which we usually live without realizing it and which are at the origin of about a third of all cases of colds that occur every year. In addition to vinegar, there are other substances that can be useful in the same way, such as eucalyptus or pine essential oil, but also products you find in the pharmacy and that you have often used to soothe the classic cold symptoms. “All these active ingredients, however, must be added at the right concentration – warns the doctor. – We cannot think of buying vinegar from the supermarket and using it for this purpose, because it would have an irritating effect. We should rather choose the one available in the pharmacy

So are fumigations and vinegar enough against Covid-19? No. When you feel a fever, cough, or other signs that make you suspect that you have contracted the infection, notify your doctor right away and ask him if he should take a tampon or take any medications. At the same time, you can too combine this all natural remedy which may make a second negative swab more likely. And if you know that you have been in contact with a positive person or a family member is in isolation at home, no one forbids you to boil water and repeat the same gestures you did as a child (a cloth covering your head and deep breaths to inhale the vapor). It could inactivate the virus to the point that it will not even be able to cause disease.
