Never before has the opposition in Belarus mobilized so many people to protest against President Lukashenko. Protests are again planned this weekend. After 26 years of authoritarian rule, the protesters now want only one thing: new, free elections.
The question is whether it will come to that. The European Union turns its back on Lukashenko and does not recognize the election results, but further calls it a domestic affair. In this video, NOS dives deeper into the already very eventful history of Belarus. What place does Lukashenko occupy? And how did it lead to the largest popular uprising in the country’s history?
