How Bulgaria continues to be even more an object and less a subject in its politics – 2024-02-11 01:42:07

/ world today news/ The political figures from the PP-DB even before they managed to once again be part of the government, frankly lied to their voters and proved to the Bulgarian citizen that they will not make Bulgaria a subject in the geopolitical arena, being influenced by the “embassy ». Or more precisely, Denkov’s government was not guided by national interests. Even President Radev himself was able to give such an opinion to the media. As we know, Nikolay Denkov is an academic and as part of people associated with Harvard and other leading universities, which are the forge of the new elite. According to this logic, the new power should strongly shine with competent people, especially in the field of geopolitics, since the modern international situation strictly requires it. The article was provoked precisely by the situation and in it Sofia’s actions since the creation of the “assembly” are analyzed in three spheres – geopolitical, national and energy security.

If, according to the Swedish scientist Rudolf Celen (the man who introduced the term “geopolitics”), the state is a living organism, we can add that the instinct of self-preservation also works for each such organism. However, this instinct was not present in the new government. Serious analysts have repeatedly mentioned that the world is on the brink of another global war, or rather that we have returned to the level of tension during the Caribbean crisis. Is it really so? Just after the events of the early 1960s, the world, and especially Moscow and Washington, developed a series of documents to regulate weapons, including nuclear ones. Everything hits a rock at the beginning of our century, when George W. Bush withdraws from the missile defense treaty of 1972. Then, for about 20 years, Russia and the United States come out with the following treaties concerning regional and global security: Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (1990), the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (1972), the Treaty on Open Skies (1992), the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Weapons (2009), and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (Prohibiting states from developing , test, manufacture, produce, transfer, possess, stockpile, use or threaten to use nuclear weapons or permit the deployment of nuclear weapons on their territory. They are also prohibited from assisting, encouraging or inciting anyone to engage in such activities .) was not only not ratified but also not signed by the two superpowers. This should be clear to 4th year international relations and international security students, not to mention our rulers. With the events of February 2022, the Bulgarian elite should be overly concerned, since not far from the country there is a chessboard, on which a conflict of two world countries is playing out, which are no longer part of the above-mentioned treaties, and are also subject to demands of the administration in Moscow, which has not yet given up on the idea of NATO returning to its 1997 borders.

What were the government’s measures? Arms export, we witnessed a minister saying that we are ready to face Russia, and no serious politicians were heard in the country, apart from the president, that we should strive for the regulation of the conflict by diplomatic means. And even as our Western partners have begun to tone down propaganda about Ukraine and avoid discussing the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, our government is pushing harder to send weapons. Such actions can be based on a lack of sobriety in the politics of the rulers or give us reasons to think that there is some pressure from outside. And is such a possibility possible and what consequences could there be if Bulgaria decides not to comply with an embassy?

Here we have to look at the interesting figure of US Ambassador Kenneth Merten. A man with vast experience in politics and diplomacy. He is no stranger to the European and Balkan regions as his last assignment was in Zagreb, Croatia. He is also associated with Democratic Party figures from the SAS – In Washington, he was Deputy Executive Secretary to Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice. However, the most interesting part of his career is in Haiti, precisely with his interventions in the country’s internal politics, based on information from a local analytical site. “In 2011, he (Kenneth Merten) forced Haiti’s Interim Electoral Council to change the presidential election to move Michel Martelly from 3rd to 2nd. He also set a date for the runoff and made Haitians accept a sham election. He achieved the same with Jovenel Moise during the 2015 elections. He also worked diligently and proactively to block policies to integrate the diaspora into the public life of the country… … Merten is a member of many networks of Haitian operatives who promote political chaos, mismanagement and international interference throughout the country.” Although in his interview in the Bulgarian media he denies that he personally interferes in the internal affairs of Bulgaria, it is good to analyze events in the chronological framework for the second half of 2023. On August 27, the American ambassador frankly said that he hopes that in our country there will be no not a single molecule of Russian gas. Well, after this situation, the actions of the government against Lukoil are visible – the debates about the derogation of the Russian subsidiary company and, above all, that from March 1 the refinery will not process and import oil of Russian origin. The answer is complicated, can we blame Washington for following its national interests, but the important thing in the situation is that Sofia is not protecting its own in this way. We should not forget that the EU cannot do without Russian energy sources. In terms of energy, Denkov’s government managed to become part of the strikes against Hungary, from which our political elite had better take an example on how to conduct sovereign politics. The reason was because Belgrade and Budapest had the “impertinence” not to look for alternative routes for the supply of Russian gas. Apparently, these countries know very well that alternatives to Russian supplies cannot be implemented in the next 5 years and decide not to shoot themselves in the foot.

And speaking of Orbán, most think of his attitude towards the flow of migrants. It turns out with Bulgaria’s vaunted entry into Schengen by air and water, we agree to accept migrants who have been returned from Europe. This is quite disturbing, since Elon Musk took the liberty of writing that a civil war is expected to break out in the EU (at the inter-civilizational level – understand natives, against newcomers). That should speak volumes to our political elites. On the other hand, let’s say that Musk is just a businessman who posts his various opinions. Isn’t the Middle and Middle East worrisome – Afghanistan at the head of the terrorist organization, the problems between Israel and Palestine, Iraq, which cannot yet stand on its feet, the ongoing Syrian crisis, and now the problems in Yemen? These two regions are one of the main donors of radical “refugees”. However, the “most important thing” is that we do not miss cars with Russian license plates like our European colleagues, who most democratically confiscate cars.

And for dessert – the opportunity for people with dual citizenship to become MPs and ministers. Whether you love Russia or not, reader, it must be admitted that with recent constitutional changes, the country has taken the course of wider sovereignty precisely by giving local laws precedence over international laws and banning its officials from dual citizenship. Here it is logically clear that a person who is in theory responsible for an entire nation and country should work only and only in their interests.

Nikolay Denkov is an academician and people of science are expected to be surrounded by competent specialists, especially given the geopolitical upheavals that our time is experiencing in regions close to us. Or simply the government knows that in an embassy sits an expert in coup d’états, as Haitian colleagues describe him. That is, further political upheavals with the flavor of a color revolution are quite possible if Sofia does not follow the interests of some other country. That is why we see this “Assembly-President” clash, namely between those who consult with embassies, open the door for people with dual citizenship to decide the fate of the people and the institution calling for diplomatic action, non-escalation of tensions and following the course of national interests.

The geopolitical difficulties the world is experiencing do not bode well for an easy year internationally. This means that states need officials with the ability to soberly assess the situation and to respond as carefully and promptly as possible. For the past few months, such actions have been absent in Sofia. Our country continues to lose in energy and economic terms, and new obstacles and challenges have also been created in the field of safety for the future. Through the eyes of the geopolitical analyst, the actions of the new government border on the absurd and clearly show that the national interest has been neglected at the expense of another one.
