On November 8, 2022, the United States will elect a new Congress. How are the intermediate exams going? The mid-term election schedule at a glance.

Washington, DC – Who gets the majority in Congress? Voters in the United States will have to answer this question on November 8, 2022. Then come the midterms. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and nearly a third of the 100 seats in the US Senate will be filled. These are the two houses of the American Parliament.

Senators are elected in the States, members of the House of Representatives are candidates in 435 constituencies scattered throughout the USA. Due to the size of the country, votes are taken in five different time zones. Also, election times differ in individual states.

Midterm schedule: When does the 2022 US election start?

In fact, Midterms 2022 has been underway since March 1st. Candidates for the midterm elections had to prove themselves in their party’s primary before the actual election date. Registered voters for Democrats and Republicans could decide who can run in the actual election on Nov. 8. The last primary was held on September 14 in Rhode Island.

Louisiana does not have a classic area code. Whoever obtains an absolute majority in the November 8 mid-term elections goes to Congress. If no one gets more than 50 percent of the vote, runoff elections are held in December.

When will the 2022 US midterm elections start?

In most states and electoral districts, voting will take place on November 8, 2022, when the Democratic and Republican candidates face off. Because the United States is divided into several time zones, election times for states or regions sometimes differ significantly.

During the Midterms, the first polling stations on the East Coast will open on 8 November at 6:00 local time, which is 12:00 Central European Time (CET). Hawaii is the latest state to begin its midterm elections at 6 p.m. ET.

When do polling stations close in mid-term?

According to the Central European Time, the first polling stations will not close until Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Elections will close at midnight in some regions of the states of Kentucky and Indiana. More and more states are following suit as the night progresses. Midterm voting closes at 7:00 (CET). At this point, the last polling stations in Alaska are closing.

  • 12:00 pm: First regions of Kentucky and Indiana
  • 1am: Parts of Florida, New Hampshire, rest of Kentucky and Indiana
  • half past one: North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia
  • 2:00 am.: Portions of Michigan, Kansas, South Dakota and Texas and the states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Maine, Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee and the capital Washington, CC
  • 2:30 am: Arkansas
  • 3:00 in the morning.: Rest of Michigan, Kansas, South Dakota and Texas, as well as the United States of Arizona, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Wyoming
  • 4:00 in the morning.: Nevada and Montana, Idaho and Oregon
  • 5:00: Remaining portions of Idaho and Oregon, entire states of California, Hawaii, Washington
  • 6:00: regions of Alaska
  • 7:00 am: Rest of Alaska

As soon as the polling stations in the States close, the counting of votes begins. During the evening, the results of the individual constituencies will arrive and the future majorities in the House and Senate will be clarified.

When are the possible runoff elections in Georgia and Louisiana?

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the midterms are over. If no candidate has won the necessary absolute majority in Senate elections in Georgia and Louisiana, a runoff will be held in both states. The calendar of possible “ballots” at a glance:

Georgia in particular is considered a contested state. Polls predict a tight result for the Senate elections. In a possible runoff in Georgia, the majority decision may be delayed well beyond November 8.

Newly elected Congressmen and Senators will finally be sworn in on January 3, 2023. This is the date the US Congress meets again for the first time.
