Hoteliers: The state should take back control of Burgas Airport – 2024-02-27 11:47:31

The state must take back control of Burgas Airport and, despite the concession contract, insist that it operate all year round, and not that flights from it be redirected to Varna, as is advantageous to the temporary owner – the company “Fraport Twin Star Airport Management” AD.

This was stated by the deputy chairman of the Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (BHRA) Veselin Nalbantov.

At the moment, the rulers allow a foreign investor to destroy tourism on the Southern Black Sea coast and turn a blind eye, the position of not only Nalbantov, but also of his colleagues from the largest Bulgarian resort Sunny Beach and the region, is categorical. There are rumors that the airport will close for renovations, but no one knows when that will actually happen, or how long it will last. It is only clear that without flights, billions of Bulgarian investments and long-term efforts go to waste. And hence less revenue in the budget, which all of us as taxpayers will have to collect in one way or another, Nalbantov pointed out.

And he explained that in recent years the Burgas airport has been deliberately neglected at the expense of the airport in Varna, which leads to the shortening of the summer season to only three months.

The concessionaire actually manages both airports in Burgas and Varna, however, deliberately diverting interest and flights to Varna, the hoteliers explain.

“It is obvious that the parent company has chosen a “favorite child”, and in the business world this is called unfair competition,” said Georgi Trpkov, a member of the BHRA Board of Directors and head of the organization’s regional structure in Pomorie.
