Because of the corona crisis, a hospital ship of the US military with around 1000 cabins is to dock in the port of New York.

(AP) – The USNS Comfort will be on its way, announced the governor of the US state of New York, Andrew Cuomo, on Wednesday. The ship should be ready soon and take patients from hospitals who are not Covid-19 diseases. “It’s like a floating hospital,” said Cuomo.

A Defense Department spokesman said the ship is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance in Norfolk, east coast state of Virginia. The work would be accelerated so that the ship is ready for use in the coming weeks, said spokesman Jonathan Hoffman. The armed forces have also put mobile units with around 1,000 beds on alert, it said.

US President Donald Trump said in the White House that in addition to the USNS Comfort, the hospital ship USNS Mercy should also be deployed. This ship is to be used on the American west coast. The exact location has yet to be determined. The “Mercy” is currently in San Diego and can be operational “within days,” said Hoffman.

New York is the US state from which the most coronavirus cases have been reported to date. According to the US health authority CDC, there were already more than 2,600 on Wednesday. Another focus of infections is on the west coast of the country, in the states of Washington and California.
