Angela McLean, mathematician biologist and advisor to the UK government, thinks the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid should be investigated. That competition went on as usual and may have had major consequences for the spread of the coronavirus.
The game was played on March 11 and several other European countries were already taking serious measures against the spread of the virus. For example, Spanish competitions were closed behind closed doors and schools were closed. However, Anfield was packed. There is a chance that unnecessarily many people have become infected as a result.
McLean wants to have that investigated. “I think it is very interesting to see if there is a connection between the number of infections in Liverpool and in Spain. That is certainly an interesting hypothesis,” she is quoted by the English newspaper The Independent.
Spanish politician José Luis Martínez-Almeida calls the match a mistake. 3000 Atletico supporters were present at Anfield and may have caused a lot of infections. “It made no sense at all for 3000 Atletico fans to travel to Anfield,” he said Onda Cero. “It was a mistake. It is easy to talk afterwards, but I think more measures should have been taken.”
