Hong Kong dispute: China announces entry restrictions for US officials

In the dispute over the autonomy status of Hongkong has sanctions against China USA announced. The State Department in Beijing said that visa restrictions would be imposed on US officials who “behaved outrageously on the Hong Kong issue.” For whom exactly the entry restrictions should apply, it was not announced. The US government had entry restrictions last week against representatives of the Chinese Communist Party that are involved in “undermining” Hong Kong’s autonomy.

Meanwhile, it says controversial law protecting national security in Hong Kong shortly before graduation. The final draft was submitted to the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress on Monday Peking submitted for advice and voting, as reported by the official Xinhua news agency. The law is primarily aimed at activities that Beijing regards as subversive or that could aim at Hong Kong’s independence.

The pro-democratic opposition fears that it will become the target of the law. It has been coming back to Hong Kong for about a year to large demonstrationswho demand more democratic participation.

When the highest body of the Chinese parliament wants to adopt the law was initially unclear. Some observers expect this to happen on Monday, others at the latest on Tuesday at the end of the three-day committee meeting. The exact text will continue to be kept secret. The law is expected to enter into force on Wednesday July 1st, the 23rd anniversary of the return of the former British Crown Colony to China in 1997.
