Honduras Launches XXIV National Anti-rabies Vaccination Campaign with Goal to Vaccinate over 1 Million Pets for Free

Under the motto “Honduras without rabies, a commitment for all,” the Ministry of Health hopes to vaccinate one million 295,650 dogs and 108,695 cats free of charge in the XXIV National Anti-rabies Vaccination Campaign, which begins this March 11 of this year.

The objective is to keep the incidence of human rabies at zero and contribute to the control of canine and feline rabies in the country, achieving 100 percent vaccination coverage in pets in all risk municipalities.

Anti-rabies vaccination has a cost of more than 18 million lempiras, including containment muzzles, biological, syringes, thermoses, ID, loudspeaker, posters among others; with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Cargill group.

Geisy Meza, brand manager of Cargill Honduras, expressed that as a socially responsible company they support the Secretariat in donating food for pets and in this way encourage dog owners to vaccinate them.

This is a sustained vaccination, where the population can go to health establishments any day of the week to immunize the dogs and cats that are born during the year.

Anti-rabies vaccination costs more than 18 million lempiras.

In Honduras, since 2009, no cases of rabies in humans have been reported and since 2014, no cases of rabies in dogs have been reported, said the Minister of Health, Carla Paredes.

The permanence and execution of these campaigns strengthens the culture of prevention, as a response to the needs of the dog-owning population, in addition to the progress achieved in favor of the country’s public health.

The purpose is to increase actions and prevent cases of canine rabies and keep deaths from rabies in humans at zero. Its success will depend on the degree of participation of the population, since this is everyone’s responsibility.

The population must vaccinate canines and felines from three months of age, the vaccine is free and safe.
