Holo monitor viewed: Looking Glass’ 8K light field monitor generates holograms

The manufacturer Looking Glass Factory has publicly presented its recently launched new 8K light field monitor at the electronics fair CES 2020 in Las Vegas. The 32-inch display creates a three-dimensional image in an approximately four cm thick glass case, in which users can look behind certain parts of the image like a real holographic projection. Golem.de took a closer look at the monitor.

Due to the thick glass pane on the front, the Looking Glass 8K is not immediately recognizable as a monitor. The pane breaks the image generated by the panel so that it can be perceived as a hologram. The stereoscopic display looks very realistic, which is also due to the high resolution of the monitor (33.2 million pixels). We have the feeling that the content hovers three-dimensionally in front of the monitor. Thanks to a Leapmotion controller, we can also interact with the content with our hand.

As usual with a hologram, we can also look behind certain picture elements by changing the viewing angle. This distinguishes the device from other monitors that can display three-dimensional content. Of course, the material must also provide the relevant information. The viewing angle is 50 degrees; If we look at the monitor from outside this limitation, the image is no longer displayed correctly.

Easily convert 3D content

In order to be able to display 3D content on the Looking Glass 8K, it must be converted using the supplied SDK. This should enable users to easily view content without additional effort. The SDK enables the conversion of a variety of formats, which is why the monitor should be suitable for industrial, medical and creative purposes.

The manufacturer sees museums as areas of application, in which visitors can virtually explore exhibits on the monitor. The Looking Glass 8K can also be used in the medical field, for example to show patients what the results of certain procedures could look like. In the creative area, the display can be used to demonstrate or edit a 3D model to other people.

Special hardware is not necessary to control the Looking Glass 8K. The device we were shown was connected to a gaming computer that contained a GTX 2080 Ti.

The Looking Glass 8K enables real holograms to be displayed. Let’s change our point of view …

The Looking Glass 8K is calibrated by hand from the factory, since each manufactured monitor has different tolerances. Therefore, it is currently not yet possible to produce the Looking Glass 8K in large quantities. On the back, the device has two display ports and a USB-C port, via which the specific configuration data of the device can be read out. This ensures the correct presentation of the material.

Due to the high production costs, the manufacturer did not publish a price for the device. If you want a monitor, you have to contact Looking Glass Factory; The device will be demonstrated in New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Tokyo.
