The Netherlands started winning this Monday at the 2022 World Cup. In a physically closely contested game, despite Senegal’s opportunities, it was Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen who scored. Thus, Louis Van Gaal’s team gets the first three points in the world championship.

In a closely contested match between the two teams, the first half didn’t offer great opportunities for both sides.

The second half saw Senegal more daring in attack, with Idrissa Gueye coming very close to goal and Noppert responding with a great defence.

At a time when Senegal seemed to be getting closer to the goal, it was the Netherlands who achieved the same goal. On the left wing of the attack, a great cross from Frenkie De Jong, a bad exit from Edouard Mendy and anticipation from Cody Gakpo, author of the goal in the 84th minute.

Already in the eighth minute of added time, Memphis Depay fired on Mendy’s incomplete defense and Davy Klaassen made it 2-0.

Senegal forced the attack trying to reach the goal but saw the three points escape close to the game. With the 2-0 result, the Netherlands added their first three points in the world championship and join Ecuador in the first position of Group A.
