Hoekstra busy ‘starting up’ budget

The cabinet has started preparing the budget for next year. It will be submitted to the House of Representatives on Budget Day.

For the first consultation on this, Minister Hoekstra spoke this morning of setting the budget “as best as possible”.

He does not expect that the current caretaker cabinet will mow the lawn away from the new cabinet. Hoekstra pointed out that his predecessors De Jager and Dijsselbloem were also outgoing when they presented their last budget. “Then the new cabinet, in collaboration with the House, drastically adjusted that budget.”

Nitrogen, climate undermining

Hoekstra mentioned the nitrogen crisis, the climate problem and undermining as subjects where more money could be spent. “But we really need to have that conversation in the cabinet and then leave it to the forming parties,” said the outgoing Minister of Finance. According to The Hague sources, the cabinet also plans to allocate more resources to accelerate the construction of homes.

Tomorrow the new figures from the Central Planning Bureau on the expected economic developments will be released. It looks like those numbers are better than previously expected. That could give the cabinet more room to do extra things.

In the coming period, the outgoing ministers will discuss the budget a few times a week. Prinsjesdag is September 21, the third Tuesday of the month.
