Crowned with success. Such a “certificate” ends one long, Zvolen era of 53-year-old Petr Oremus. He has experienced a lot, the championship (2021), the final (2023), and the 700th game in his coaching career.
However, since November, the results of the “knights” began to deteriorate, a string of six losses came – the longest during Oremus and Kmeč in Zvolen. Despite this, the club’s management still expressed confidence in them, but when the game and the results did not improve in December, after a loss with Humenný (0:3), they broke up. By mutual agreement – it was heard. However, we know that the Zvolen leadership convinced Oremus to stay on Tuesday. We spoke with him on Wednesday.

The training process will be led by Norbert Javorčík and Janis Andersons in the coming days, but the club is working on hiring coaches who will lead the team for the rest of the season. The elected officials informed about the coaching change on the official website.
It’s really hard to leave after all the good and positive things you’ve experienced in Zvolen in three and a half years. Is that so?
“We were like one family. With the club management, people around and also with the players. We found a very good relationship. I regret such a departure. My colleague Kmeč and I went to the stadium every day with joy. It wasn’t just about the victories, but you could talk to everyone about non-hockey stuff as well. I will miss that.’
This isn’t the kind of breakup that’s going to slam the door on the club or coach, is it?
“We parted for good. The next time we come to Zvolen with my colleague Kmeč, we will always be able to sit down with the president of the club and people from the management for a debate.”
From what we know, we assume that the initiative to end cooperation could have come from you. Was it so?
“We had meetings with the players and with the management and together we came to a final opinion.”
Why do you think the Zvolen team plays with such fluctuations lately?
“The opening fifteen rounds were really good. Then there was a change. Until then, we always had 20 players available. Then some recovered, 21 and 22 hockey players were already available, and maybe that affected the team’s progress. Now it is important for Zvolen that the team plays as it did at Slovan, where we won. They must do everything to be in the forefront again. He was elected there for three years, and I firmly believe that it will continue to be so.”
The topic discussed is foreigners in HKM. Have they fallen short of your expectations this season?
“There are only 8 Slovaks among the 43 best in Canadian scoring in the extra league. Whoever does not have it built on foreigners, it is bad for him. There are good foreigners in Zvolen, but their points were not good enough to make it higher.”
What can be said about goalkeeper Kupský’s performances?
“I will not comment on individuals. As in previous years, we chose foreigners. They were doing better before. They know that they have to give more for the Chosen One. Now they have to confirm it.’
Did you experience one of your best coaching periods in Zvolen?
“Everywhere I worked, i.e. in Skalica, Nitra, Košice, Trenčín and Zvolen, with the exception of Nitra, where it was a semi-final, I played with the team in the final. I have a medal with every club. In Zvolen, however, it was not only about the sports side. I’ve talked about it before.’
What was more? The championship title from 2021, or the medal continuity of the past three seasons?

“I am happy with the medal balance, but the title with Zvolen was really beautiful. It’s just a shame that the audience couldn’t go to the auditorium at that time due to the pandemic. However, we are definitely pleased with the mark Andrej Kmeč and I left on HKM.”
What would you recommend to the HKM management when looking for a new coach? What does the Zvolen team need?
“Not only in Zvolen, but also elsewhere, if it is not done that young people from Slovakia will have space, then there will be no coaches for the extra league. I understand that club owners want to see success, but sometimes such a step has to be taken. I’m not saying whether a young Slovak is needed as a coach in Zvolen in this situation, but I’m speaking in general.”

“I’ll see what happens next.”
