Theresa Ratliff has been riding horses and riding in the stable at Cedar Valley Stables in Eagle Mountain, Utah for years.
Monday night this week, she was to teach in the stable, and took with her three-year-old Odin and her friend Hunter Jackson (3).
– Our stable is a safe haven. Odin literally grew up there, she says Fox News 13.
Sat and played
The two children were sitting outside the stable in an enclosure, playing with cars and tractors when she suddenly heard a loud and long bang.
Ratliff ran out of the stable and saw his son lying unconscious near a car wreck.
– He was gone. There was nothing I could do, says my mother.
The two three-year-olds had been hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver.
The car had driven through several fences and eventually overturned.
Both Odin and Hunter died instantly from the injuries.
Intoxicated
In a written statement from the police it says that it was over 100 meters from the road to the three-year-olds where the car landed.
The driver, a 25-year-old man, allegedly drove at more than 160 kilometers per hour when he lost control of the car.
A drug test taken shortly after the accident showed that the 25-year-old had taken both methamphetamine and amphetamine.
He is now facing several charges, including two counts of murder and reckless driving.
– Utah County Police express sympathy for the family and friends of these two cute boys. The loss is a meaningless tragedy, and we can not imagine the bottomless grief. Our prayers are with them as they face this difficult time, police said in a statement.
– Now he’s in heaven
Balloons and stuffed animals are now placed in the enclosure where the two three-year-olds played before they were killed.
– It does not feel real, even though the memories I have from last night are very clear. I’ll miss him – and I already do. Right now he is in heaven with many people who love him, says Odin’s mother.
