History page: Victor Babeș, the Romanian genius who was not rewarded with the Nobel Prize

Victor Babeș was born in 1854 in Vienna, where his father, lawyer and politician from Banat Vincențiu Babeș worked at the High Court of Cassation in the capital of the Austrian Empire.

Victor Babeș studied Medicine, first in Budapest, where his father had been appointed president of the court called Tabula Regia. Then, Victor Babeș received his doctorate in Vienna.

He quickly became passionate about microbiology and decided to deepen his knowledge in the laboratories of the most well-known specialists in the world in this field. In Paris, Victor Babeș worked with scientists such as Louis Pasteur, and in Berlin with biologists such as Robert Koch.

Following his research, Victor Babeș highlighted over 40 pathogenic microorganisms. He was also involved in treating and preventing diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy, rabies or diphtheria. At the same time, the Romanian scientist has developed an important series of vaccines that are currently used all over the world.

Victor Babeș was one of the candidates for the Nobel Prize for his treatise on bacteriology, the first of its kind in the world. During his time in France, Victor Babeș developed a series of left-wing political beliefs, but he was never a communist, but a liberal.

He settled in Bucharest at the request of his friend, Liberal Prime Minister Dimitrie Sturza. In 1893, Victor Babeș became a member of the Romanian Academy. Subsequently, he was elected a corresponding member of the French Medical Academy, and the French state offered him his highest decoration, the Legion of Honor.

Victor Babeș died in 1926, and his memory is honored by institutions such as the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj.
