History of Meganthropus Paleojavanicus, the Oldest Early Man in Indonesia

The name Meganthropus Paleojavanicus itself means “the Big Man from Java”. Naming fossils is also not without reason.

Meganthropus Paleojavanicus has a body that is quite large than other early humans. That’s why, researchers finally gave their name as Big Man.

The history of this ancient Indonesian man can be seen from some of the remains of life around the place of his discovery.

Researchers who examine ancient human fossils of this type of Meganthropus estimate that they come from the oldest period, namely the lower Pleistocene, or about 2,588,000 years ago.

Discovery of Meganthropus Paleojavanicus

The person who contributed to the discovery of the Meganthropus Paleojavanicus fossil was GHR Von Koeningswald. He managed to find fossils in 1936.

Launching on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s website, in 1937 another archaeologist joined on a mission trip to Java named Franz Weidenreich.

They managed to find a fossil of Meganthropus Paleojavanicus at the Sangiran site, precisely in the Pucangan formation. The composition of the fossil bones from the history of Meganthropus Paleojavanicus that were detected included the lower and upper jaw bones, skulls, and some teeth that had been detached.

After doing some research, the researchers finally confirmed that during its lifetime, Meganthropus Paleojavanicus ate plants.

Characteristics of Meganthropus Paleojavanicus

This great man from Java has special characteristics, namely:

  • Strong body stature.
  • Has a forehead bulge that is quite conspicuous.
  • Does not have a chin bone.
  • Meganthropus Paleojavanicus has strong chewing muscles.
  • It eats all kinds of plants throughout its life.
  • Their cheekbones are thick and strong.
  • Has a sharp back bulge.
  • The neck muscles they have are big and strong.

Besides Meganthropus Paleojavanicus, there are also several other ancient human fossils found in Indonesia, such as Pithecanthropus and Homo Sapiens.
