History, comics, gastronomy: a week in Vienna dedicated to the Jews of Algeria with Benjamin Stora as guest star

Much in demand in this year of commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of the Evian Accords which put an end to the Algerian War, “the” great historian of Algeria, Benjamin Stora, himself born in Algeria, will be in Vienna on May 12.

In the Auditorium of the Museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal, on May 12, he will discuss at length the history of the Jews of Algeria, those who are called “Sefarads” to distinguish them from the “Askhenazis”, originating from central Europe. And this, through a comic strip which was devoted to this history of the Jews of Algeria whose authors are Nicolas Le Scanff and Benjamin Stora (“History drawn by the Jews of Algeria” published by La Découverte) which will serve as a starting point. support to tell, illustrate, a whole destiny, a whole rich culture.

According to Yvan Mathevet, head of public reception at the museum on the right bank of the Rhône, “The fact that such a conference is taking place at the museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal makes sense: there was already a presence Jewish people in Algeria during Antiquity and we know that the port of ancient Vienna, which then extended on both banks of the Rhône, was a gateway for many products of Mediterranean origin and a place of exchange of which the museum collections preserve the memory.”

Because the Jews of Algeria are bearers of a real history, a real culture that Ryma Prost-Romand, creator of the restaurant Mama Trötter whose family is from Algeria, intends to present for a whole week, in her establishment, in partnership with the Viennese bookstores “Bulles de Vienne” and “Passerelles” where you can find all the works of Benjamain Stora, as well as the museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal.

For Ryma Prost-Romand, this “Designed History of the Jews of Algeria” is above all “a book of memory and reconciliation: it is with this spirit that we have imagined this whole week.”

What she will translate for her part in a gastronomic way with a week devoted therefore to Sephardic cuisine very rich in gourmet recipes, with a specific menu in which we should find in particular Tfina, flavored meatballs or even a couscous specific. There will be cooking workshops throughout the week, especially for the youngest.
