Historic – Switzerland signs a transfer agreement with the NHL
Switzerland was the only important ice hockey country without a transfer agreement with the National Hockey League (NHL) for years. Now this transfer contract will be signed when a special new foreign nationals rule in the National League complements the agreement as part of a conference call next week.
The National Hockey League (NHL) as the most important and best league in the world is neither a member of a national association nor of the international association (IIHF). Put simply, the NHL can do whatever it wants, regardless of the needs of international ice hockey (World Cup tournaments, Olympic games, transfers).
The transfer regulations among the IIHF member countries also do not apply. That is why the NHL has concluded a transfer agreement with the individual hocky associations. All large and medium-sized hockey nations, from Sweden, Finland to Denmark and Norway to Great Britain have signed this transfer agreement. Only Russia and Switzerland have not so far. Now the Swiss also sign the transfer scheme with the NHL if the accompanying measure (new foreigner rule) comes through. It should apply from next season.
These are the main points
The right of access. The NHL may oblige any player until July 15th, even those with current contracts without an NHL exit clause.
The deadlines. In order to give the teams a certain degree of planning security, the NHL contract must be signed by July 15th at the latest. Players drafted in the year in question have a deadline of August 15.
The transfer sums. For the first ten players moving from an association overseas, the NHL will have to shell out $ 260,000, plus $ 350,000 per player. Since it cannot be assumed that ten players with current contracts will move from the National League to the NHL in the same year, it will remain at this $ 260,000. There is also compensation for each drafted player. This sum ($ 40,000 for a first round draft) will be split according to a specific key among the last four clubs the player in question played at. So far there has been no money for the club without a transfer agreement with an NHL draft.

Additional foreigner license in the event of an NHL departure
This agreement is supplemented by accompanying measures, which are essential for the signing of the agreement. Next week, the club bosses want to decide on a special arrangement as part of a conference call: Any club that loses a player with a current contract as a result of the transfer agreement can replace him with an additional foreigner. However, this rule only applies if a player leaves the club in the direction of the NHL from a valid contract without release clauses.
This measure makes sense. For example, if EV Zug lost Leonardo Genoni in June due to a transfer to the NHL, it would be impossible to find a replacement on the Swiss market.
The transfer agreement eliminates the NHL exit clauses in the player contracts. From now on, everyone can switch to the NHL every year from a valid contract.
The new transfer regulation makes it easier for the Swiss to enter the NHL. Now, the interested NHL general managers no longer need to clarify to find out whether a player actually has an NHL release clause and no negotiations about a release are necessary.
Only important hockey country without an agreement? Russia might beg to differ.
