According to the Department of Justice, prosecutors in Maryland recently arrested and indicted Frederick D. Moorefield Jr., deputy director of the Department of Defense’s Command, Control and Communications Department, on charges of operating an illegal dog fighting ring. “Moorefield and (his) associates used an encrypted messaging app to discuss ways to train vicious dogs for illegal dog fighting, exchange videos of dog fights, and arrange and coordinate actual dog fight schedules,” the Justice Department said. “Moorfield also discussed dog fighting gambling and how to dispose of the carcasses of dogs killed in dog fighting,” he said. “He also discussed with his colleagues how to hide (his illegal) activities from law enforcement.” “He said.

According to the Justice Department, Moorefield appears to have been involved in dog fighting and gambling since at least 2009. Maryland prosecutors said at least 12 dogs were seized from two properties owned by Deputy Moorefield. The Ministry of Justice said, “Moorfield abandoned two vicious dogs, presumed to have died as a result of dog fighting, at his home in Maryland in 2018,” and added, “(Investigation authorities) were able to identify Moorefield through mail found along with the bodies of the vicious dogs.” “There was,” he said.

Moorefield is said to have used the secret code name ‘Geehad’ in dog fighting groups. It is presumed to be a modification of the word jihad, which refers to Islam’s religious war against infidels. The Ministry of Justice said, “When investigative authorities came to search Moorefield’s home, he admitted to the charge of participating in dog fighting,” and “(during the search of Moorefield’s home) they also confiscated items that appeared to have been used to kill a dog that had lost a fight.” He said. It was discovered that he electrocuted the vicious dogs using jumper cables and electric plugs. In addition, steroids believed to have been administered to vicious dogs, a dog fighting training schedule, and blood-stained carpets were also confiscated from his home.

If convicted, Moorefield could face up to five years in prison for owning, training or transporting animals for use in dog fighting, the Justice Department said.
