High energy prices push down CO2 emissions in first quarter | NOW

Greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands were 11 percent lower in the first quarter of this year than in the same period last year, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands and RIVM on Wednesday. This is mainly due to the fact that less natural gas was used, which in turn is a result of, among other things, the high prices.

We used a quarter less natural gas in the first three months of this year. The main reason for this is the natural gas price. It has continued to rise since the end of the corona crisis and has been given an extra boost due to the war in Ukraine. In addition, the winter this year was also milder than last year and slightly more renewable energy was produced.

However, CO2 emissions from petrol rose by 8 percent. Diesel emissions decreased by 4 percent in the past quarter. This means that CO2 emissions from fuel are still below the level before the corona pandemic.

In 2021 alley greenhouse gas emissions by 2 percent, as a result of which the Dutch government has not achieved its own reduction target for that year. This was successful in 2020, but that was mainly due to the fact that emissions due to the corona crisis turned out lower than expected.
