High-end PCs are being banned in some US states

Gamers who live in some US states are experiencing a very unusual situation, as the most powerful computers that consume more electricity are being banned in California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii and Vermont.

Dell’s own online store now has a notice on its Alienware desktops warning that these states can no longer purchase the gamer PC, as it does not conform to current local laws on power consumption. Similar measures were also applied to the website of Amazon and other retailers.

The new law is especially focused on a machine’s power consumption when it is idle, hibernating or in sleep mode, as well as assigning a numerical score to measure whether your computer is a high-end machine or not.

All Americans residing in the aforementioned states can no longer buy machines with a score higher than 690 and failing the energy consumption metrics, but there is a way around the problem: you can still buy the separate parts and assemble an equivalent machine on its own!

In other words, in practice these laws are only serving to prevent the sale of high-end desktops with all the parts already installed. Let’s hope that Brazil is not inspired by this unusual decision, right? Tell us here in the comments what you think of this controversy!
