Hiber cancels plan for its own iot satellite network due to technical problems – IT Pro – News

Dutch satellite company Hiber is canceling its plans to start a large internet-of-things satellite network. The company already has four satellites in orbit, but is not satisfied with the result.

Hiber meldt in a letter to the American regulator FCC that it will give back its Dutch license to launch these IoT satellites. Of the four satellites the company has made as of 2018, two have already stopped working and the other two are facing serious technical problems.

Furthermore, the pandemic has also made it more difficult to find financing for the further course of the project, Hiber reports in the letter. The Dutch could not travel to America to negotiate with possible investors. The company already had plans to expand to the US, but is now also canceling it. Hiber now says it wants to provide similar services via third-party satellites.

Hiber started the iot project in 2018 in an effort to establish a large Low Power Global Area Network called Hiberband. From here, livestock or transport could then be tracked and traced. A total of 24 nanosatellites had to be launched into space. The CEO of the company said every quarter in 2019 some new ones wanted to launch, but it never got to that point. Hiber has invested a total of 28 million euros in the project.
