Hessian Technical School for Choral Conducting: Training Future Choir Directors

Under the motto: “A choir without choir director is like a football team without a coach!” The Hessian Singers’ Association, Hessen’s largest choir association, offers a technical school especially for choir directors. (Photo: Uwe Henkhaus)

On September 30th it starts again, the qualified training as a choir director at the Hessian Technical School for Choral Conducting. Anyone who would like to get an idea of the training content, get to know the lecturers and ask questions is welcome to the KickOff event at Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory, Musikakademie Frankfurt am Main, Sonnemannstraße 16 in Frankfurt.

Why a course in choral conducting?

While choral singers may sing primarily to relax, enjoy community, and be active in their free time, choral conducting is a job that carries a lot of responsibility and comes with high expectations. The subjects of conducting and rehearsal methodology form a focal point of the training. In addition, the basics in composition, general music theory, ear training (sight reading, rhythm, listening dictation), score playing and choir-specific music history are laid, and organizational aspects (such as choir management, administration) as well as pedagogical and psychological content (communication, group dynamics, etc.) .) taken into account. Choral and individual voice training complete the range of subjects. The future choir directors learn to consciously use all of their expressive possibilities – using words, gestures, facial expressions, even the whole body. You will also learn to properly assess the choir’s feedback. What you have learned is then put into practice in internships with various choirs.

For years, the Hessian Singers’ Association has been offering all interested parties qualified training to become a choir director. Since 2022, this has been carried out by the Hessian Technical School for Choral Conducting as the successor to the Frankfurt and Marburg Choir Conducting Schools with a streamlined training.

Lessons begin with an intensive phase from September 30th to October 3rd at the State Music Academy in Schlitz. After that, the course content will be deepened and expanded over a period of nine months on one Saturday a month at the Frankfurt (Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory) or Marburg (Philipps University Music Hall) locations. In the middle, the courses meet again for an intensive weekend.

The conclusion is an examination in various grades. According to the model of the German Choir Association, there will be degrees C1, C2 and C3 in the field of direction for adult choirs. With 30 lessons, the C1 course is the offer for basic or vice-choir conducting. With 60 lessons, the participants of the C2 course should be able to take on choir rehearsals independently and to make smaller appearances. With 120 lessons, the C3 course enables you to lead and develop choirs independently.

The offer is aimed at choir directors, deputy choir directors, interested choir singers, teachers, students and schoolchildren.
