It was just before the finish line in central Umeå that one of the cars got stuck in a snow embankment and several members of the audience jumped onto the track to help the drivers. Shortly after, the next rally car came at full speed and the crowd reacted strongly when they realized how close it was to a collision.
Security manager: “We don’t want spectators on the track”
The speaker on site was unsure if the audience would help and the security manager Rickard Johansson at Rally Sweden says they had the situation under control. But in the pictures you can see how the crowd slipped around on the road 15 seconds before the next car came skidding behind the curve.
– This is how it is in rallying. The audience wants to help. But we don’t want the audience on the road, says Rickard Johansson.
