Like Microsoft, Sony will allow PS5 customers who own certain PS4 games to enjoy the PS5 version for free. A system reminiscent of the Smart Delivery of Xbox Series X. We take stock of the list of games concerned at this stage.

Since the first mentions of the PS5 the question of backward compatibility and of improved game graphics that would be is undoubtedly one that comes up the most. Initially, a cluster of clues even pointed to wide backward compatibility up to PS1. A little as if Sony wanted to make the PS5 the model that unites all generations.

Yet over the months the tone has changed dramatically. And the promise of vast backward compatibility has shrunk like a shit. To date, we now expect a more tenuous backward compatibility mainly on PS4 games. There will also be games coming out on PS4 and PS5 in the coming months., and will therefore benefit from two versions with improved graphics on PS5. However, players who own these games will benefit from the PS5 version for free.
One way for Sony to respond to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system, which allows again to benefit from free updated versions of Xbox One games on the Xbox Series X. Unlike this system, however, Sony distinguishes between disk and dematerialized versions. Understand that if you have a boxed game, you will need the PS5 with disc drive to qualify for the update.

We will of course update this list as soon as a studio makes a new announcement. It should be noted that this list is separate from PS4 games which will potentially simply be backward compatible – Sony has pledged a total of 100 of the most popular games before reaching up to 4,000 titles.
