Here is the best-selling Italian cheese in the world

The Parmesan Cheese closes 2021 with positive data regarding sales and prices, the consumer turnover touches an all-time high of 2.7 billion euros against 2.35 billion in 2020; at most also the value generated in production with 1.71 billion euros. Last year production grew by 3.9% compared to 2020 to 1.71 billion euros (from 1.52 in 2020) and the 4.09 million wheels marketed in 2021 (about 163 thousand tons) represent the level highest in history of Parmigiano Reggiano.

The Consortium also recorded a positive and stable listing in 2021 with an annual average of prices of 10.34 Euros (cheese matured for 12 months from the producer dairy), with price fluctuations contained between 10.25 euros / kg and 10.40 euros / kg, while in 2020 the average was 8.57 euros / kg and in 2019, before the start of the pandemic, 10.76 euros / kg.

As regards the distribution of consumption, Italy, which represents the 55% of the marketrecorded an increase in consumption equal to + 4.5% compared to the levels prior to the health crisis: 89,101 tons in 2021 against 85,258 in 2019. The figure is slightly down (-1.3%) if compared to that of 2020: year in which, due to the first lockdown, a domestic consumption boom of the product.

The Big organised distribution remains the first distribution channel (51%), followed by direct sales of dairies which recorded a strong increase, and by industry (14%), which benefits from the growing popularity of products characterized by the presence of Parmesan Cheese among the ingredients. The Horeca channel remains at the bottom, and therefore enormous development potential, but recovers volumes and stands at 7% of the total compared to the 2% recorded in 2020. The remaining 8% is distributed in the other sales channels.

The export share is 45% (+ 2.9% growth in volume compared to the previous year). The United States are the first market (21% of total exports), followed by France (19%), Germany (17%), United Kingdom (11%) and Canada (5%). In the most important markets, the best performances, compared to 2020, were recorded in the USA (+ 10.4%), in France (+ 4.5%) and in Canada (+ 5.5%). Most European markets are also growing, in particular Swiss (+14,7%) e Sweden (+ 13.2%). The United Kingdom (-15.6% due to the consequences of Brexit) and Germany (-1.9%) are losing ground.

Looking ahead, the Consortium aims to further increase overseas sales and for 2022 a price increase to the production of 10-15 percent but one substantial stability of consumer prices.
