Sony’s VR headset for Playstation currently has just over five years on its neck, and is one of the best-selling on the market. During the CES show in Las Vegas, the company finally launched the sequel, which is unsurprisingly called Playstation VR2.
The 22nd of February showed Sony for the first time up the finished design of the headset and the associated hand controls. They go in the same color scheme as the Playstation 5 console.
This time, eye tracking is built into the unit, which provides the option of focus-controlled image rendering (foveated rendering). This means that the image becomes razor sharp where you look and more blurred around, according to the same principle as your own eyes.
This is combined with a couple of new hand controls with haptic feedback, VR2 Sense. The headset is connected to a Playstation 5 controller via a USB cable and is therefore not independent.
High resolution and large field of view
Instead, Sony focuses on high performance and visual experiences. PSVR2 has OLED panels with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye and an image refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The field of view should be up to 110 degrees, compared to 100 degrees in the predecessor.
Several built-in cameras and sensors will map how the user moves in the physical room.
The new headset should be more ergonomic and weigh less than its predecessor. Sony has also introduced a new ventilation solution that prevents the lenses from fogging up again during longer sessions.
Sony has not set a launch date, but previous rumors have pointed to sales starting in 2022. Nor have we received a price tag for either headsets or controllers.
However, during the launch, Sony revealed that one of the first exclusive games for PSVR2 will be Horizon Call of the Mountain, a spinoff of the post-apocalyptic game series that started with Horizon Zero Dawn.
