The American Federal Road Safety Authority, NHTSA, has launched an investigation involving 30 million vehicles and, specifically, the airbag inflators. The checks concern the installations that took place between 2001 and 2009 on different car models. It would seem that no cars marketed in Italy are involved but the checks have not yet been completed.

The investigation into defective airbags

The inflators are under the NHTSA’s magnifying glass. The survey, unofficial for now, has focused on the systems used chemical loading of the airbags in the event of a collision. The explosion should involve a harmless gas but for years the American body has been conducting checks on the airbags produced by Takata Corporation.

The object of the checks is the drying agent che is located inside the inflators which is essential to generate the controlled explosion after a car crash. The investigation was initiated after the wounding of 400 people following the activation of the system in relation to accidents in which 28 people have died worldwide. The defect appears to be there, therefore, but the NHTSA has so far stated that the current risk has not been identified while working to establish any future risks of inflators not yet recalled. The fear is to discover other products that contain metal elements which would splash as a result of an impact risking injuring the passengers of the car.

The car manufacturers involved

The automotive safety investigation into Takata’s defective airbags goes on for more than 10 years. In this long period, over 100 million risky devices have been identified, of which 67 million in the USA. Some of the car manufacturers currently under investigation are Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, General Motors, Daimler, Chrysler, Ferrari e Mazda.

The models directly involved in the defect are not known. As a result, they could circulate on American roads millions of vehicles whose owners are unaware of the malfunctioning of the inflators and thus risk serious injuries if an accident occurs.
