The failure of the United States to reduce the spread of the corona virus will result in massive casualties, especially for vulnerable groups of people, although it can lead to group immunity (herd immunity).
This was revealed by the Director of the US Institute of Infectious Diseases and Allergies, Anthony Fauci, during a discussion session that was broadcast on Instagram.
“If everyone catches the virus, even though the proportion of people who are not symptomatic is high … there will still be a lot of casualties,” he said, as quoted from Antara. CNN.
As of this week, at least 167 thousand people have died in the United States because of the virus called Covid-19.
“You look at the United States, with obesity rates that have become epidemic, with a lot of people having high blood pressure, with a lot of people with diabetes … the death rate would be very large and unacceptable,” Fauci said.
The concept of herd immunity can be achieved when 70-90 percent of the population has immunity against a disease. This immunity can be achieved through contracting the disease and then recovering, or vaccination.
When that number is reached, the disease will be difficult to transmit to people who do not have immunity, because of the number carrier (the person carrying the virus) is very small.
Until now it is not known whether Covid-19 sufferers have long-term immunity, although some parties have called for if this disease is left alone, group immunity will occur more quickly.
However, that scenario would be disastrous for hospitals as health workers would have a hard time dealing with the explosion of patients, and more people would die.
To date, 5.2 million people have been infected with the corona virus in the United States and the projected number will increase by 189 thousand cases in the next three weeks.
New calculations issued by John Hopkins University also estimate that in early September the number of deaths from corona in the US could reach 200,000.
