Au spring last, the maire of Besan, Stephane Pepin-Bonetdecided to install a ecuroduct on his commune, above the road to Agdethe RD 13in order to preserve the squirrel populations. On this path, in fact, the animals become massacre : ” There is too much mortality squirrels on the roads, the overwrite rate is too much raisedit’s necessary to preserve this species, ”assured the elected representative from Hérault.

Protect the squirrels

The project was born: the écuroduc, a air lift consisting of a taut rope between two trees to facilitate the passage of small mammals, was installed by theassociation Cohab, the financing of the operation being provided by the municipality of Bessan in connection with the Hérault Departmental Council.

The first Hérault écuroducts had already been installed on departmental road 5, between Montagnac and Villeveyrac

Tree-friendly facilities

In Bessan, the écuroduc works. Recently fitted with a photographic devicethe installation even immortalized on film its first red squirrel tightrope walker: “These ecuroducts are smart facilities et respectful of the carrier shaftsusually fruit-bearing, and allow the squirrel toto avoid the passage on theasphalt and so on move in all security on his living area,” recalls Cohab.

Few écuroducts in the Hérault

Hoping that the idea will gain ground, and that other municipalities will equip themselves with these clever ecuroducts: there are still very few in the Hérault, but Stéphane Pépin-Bonet ensures “that they represent an essential plus for the protection of our precious biodiversity”.
