Henry Kissinger: A Biography and Legacy from Germany to the USA

The next classic of realpolitik and one of the most quoted intellectuals in the world in the XXI century was born on May 27, 1923 in Germany (at that time in the Weimar Republic), in the Bavarian city of Firth, in a deeply religious Jewish family. Kissinger’s father was a teacher, and his mother was a housewife. After birth, the couple’s eldest son was given the name Heinz, which he later changed to Henry when he was already in the United States. Kissinger also had a younger brother, Walter, who was born two years after him, but as for the surname Kissinger, it is considered to be of German origin and associated with the town of Bad Kissingen in Bavaria.

In 1938, the family left Germany and went to the USA, where they settled in New York. As Kissinger himself wrote, the family experienced increasing “ostracism and discrimination” in Germany, and his mother, Paula, who was the main initiator of the move, feared that the situation would only get worse with time. Moreover, these fears proved to be true, as several of Kissinger’s relatives who remained in Germany lost their lives in the subsequent Holocaust.
