“Hema is thinking of leaving Germany”

After the announced departure from the United Kingdom, the Dutch retail chain Hema is also thinking of leaving the German market. A spokeswoman for the company has told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine that the departure is an option. The decision is expected to be made in October at the latest.

Last week, Hema announced that it would close its six British branches this summer. The new CEO Saskia Egas Reparaz wants the company to focus more on countries where the most turnover is achieved, such as the home market of the Netherlands, but also Belgium.

In Germany, eighteen stores have been opened in major cities across the country since 2017. Originally the idea was to grow to about a hundred branches. The decision on the withdrawal from Germany will probably be made in October at the latest. “That’s our goal, but we take our time. We want to work precisely,” said the spokeswoman.

Hema is not only thinking about the future of the stores in Germany, but also in all other countries outside the Benelux and France. The group also has branches in Austria and Spain. In total, Hema has almost 800 stores and 19,000 employees.
