Helping People with Autism Play Sports: Collaboration between Sport Santé Famille and Autisme Entraide Sans Frontière

In order to help people suffering from autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to play sports, the associations Sport Santé Famille (SSF) and Autisme Entraide Sans Frontière (AESF) joined forces for an afternoon of discovery, Saturday September 30 , in the premises of the former Maurice-Guyot high school, in Montluçon (Allier).

Young autistic people and their companions were able to learn about hand chairs with the Vaux club, fencing, blowguns, qi gong, sophrology, fitness, activities offered by Sport Santé Famille. A horse therapy workshop was also available with the Étrier de Villebret equestrian club.

The importance of having physical activity

For AESF, this collaboration between the two associations is important because people and in particular children suffering from ASD have difficulty practicing a sporting activity.

“Some clubs refuse to take autistic children. Others accept them but the way of teaching is very often not suitable. Frédéric Ferrandon, the president of SSF, contacted us during the association forum last year. He told us about his desire to move towards disability.”

Help create social connections

By opening its activities to people with ASD, Sport Santé Famille will allow them to benefit from the benefits of sport.

“In addition to the health benefits, like anyone else, sport is a way for people suffering from autistic disorders to release tension and have a social connection. For adults, it helps them get out of the house them.”

Isabelle Galle

The president of AESF highlights the fact that the association is ready to provide all the necessary information to clubs and trainers to help them welcome and care for people suffering from autism spectrum disorders.
