Strong wind, blizzards and risk of winds on the roads

In the last days of February, the weather reminds us that winter is still here. Off the coast of southern Italy in the Ionian Sea, orbital meteorological satellites are already showing the formation of a Mediterranean cyclone, which is expected to move northeast to the Black Sea in the next 2-3 days.

Sunday will be cloudy with rain and snow. From the morning it will snow in the west and rain in the east, which will quickly turn to snow. By the end of the day the snowfall will be intense in the Rila-Rhodope region, the Western Stara Planina and the Fore-Balkans. It will be windy with cold northeastern gusts, which in addition to the feeling of colder weather, carries the risk of blizzards, drifts and winds on the roads. Dangerous weather warnings are in effect across the country.

Temperatures on Sunday morning will be between 0 and 5 degrees. In the warmest part of the day the thermometers will fluctuate from 2-3 to 7-8 degrees.

By the end of the day, the snowfall will cover almost the entire country, even the extreme eastern regions. During the night and in the early hours of Monday in the Southwest, precipitation will decrease and stop, but will continue in Central and Eastern Bulgaria with significant amounts around the Balkan Mountains and Ludogorie. It will remain windy with the strongest gusts in the Northeast, where there will be preconditions for gusts. Daily temperatures will be two to two degrees lower than Sunday’s values, in the range of 0 to 5-6 degrees.

On Tuesday the snowfall will be lighter and in fewer places, mainly in Northern Bulgaria. By the end of the day, the balance will be a new snow cover of up to 10-15 centimeters in places in western and northern Bulgaria. In the mountains the potential for precipitation is about and over 50 centimeters of new snow.

On Wednesday the clouds in Western and Central Bulgaria will break. In the days until the end of the week the daily temperatures will rise slightly, but early in the morning the weather will be frosty. In the valleys of Western Bulgaria the thermometers will show up to minus 8 – minus 10 degrees.
