On Friday morning, customers found the door closed at Léman Center in Crissier. A piece of the roof indeed gave way Thursday evening before crashing into the shelves of the Coop hypermarket, while heavy rains fell in the region.
No victim
As the water damage affected the whole ofa shopping center, including several shopping malls, an ordinary opening was not possible. Customers were able to penetrate 13 h because several stores were available again. MBut the hypermarket, where the collapse took place, «remains closed until further notice», announced the Coop. Fortunately, the damage is only material: «This collapse caused no victim», specifies the cantonal police of Vaud.
The incident mobilized 18 firefighters, the cantonal gendarmerie and the police in the West of Lausanne. The property manager of Crissier, Stéphane Rezso, has as well been called in the middle of the night to see the damage. «We were alarmed by the firefighters and we moved to evaluate actions to be taken.» He adds with relief: «Fortunately, the incident took place last night and not in the middle of the day when the center is busy. There would have been injuries.»
Failure of sprinklers
The causes precise of the collapse are not yet known although the rain probably played a role. In contrast, the water damage was largely caused by the breakage of the sprinklers. Affected by the falling piece of roof, they caused flooding in the‘whole from the mall.
“Fortunately, the incident happened last night and not in the middle of the day when the center is busy. There would have been wounded ”
