Heat Waves and Typhoon ‘Kanun’: Updates and Precautions for the Country

[앵커]

Heat waves have been continuing across the country for over two weeks.

The heat wave will slow down for a while due to the influence of Typhoon ‘Kanun’, but strong rain and wind are predicted across the country.

Let’s connect to the KBS Disaster Media Center and find out about heat waves and typhoons.

Reporter Kim Se-hyun! How is the heat wave today?

[기자]

Yes, a heat wave warning is issued in most areas of the country except for Yeongdong, Gangwon today.

Look at the number of days of heat waves and tropical nights since the end of the rainy season.

In Seoul, Chuncheon, Daejeon, and Gwangju, the highest temperature exceeded 33 degrees on the 11th, and in Daegu on the 12th.

The heat continued not only during the day, but also at night.

In Seoul, Gangneung, and Busan, tropical nights where the temperature did not drop below 25 degrees overnight appeared for more than 10 days.

As the heat continues day and night like this, heat-related illnesses continue to occur.

On the last 6 days alone, 107 heat-related illnesses occurred.

Three of them were believed to have died from heat-related illness.

A total of 24 deaths have been reported.

It’s the most since the record-breaking heat wave in the summer of 2018, when 48 people died.

The heat is expected to continue today, so be careful.

Most of the west side was over 30 degrees.

Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do is recording 34.6 degrees.

In the future, as the temperature continues to rise, the heatwave will continue today.

It is predicted that the highest temperature during the day will rise to 36 degrees in Seoul and Daejeon, 35 degrees in Daegu and 37 degrees in Gwangju.

Avoid outdoor activities in the middle of the day.

If you have to go out, block sunlight with a parasol and hat, and drink water frequently.

Typhoon ‘Kanun’ is affecting this heat wave, and it was predicted to land on the southern coast the day after tomorrow.

The heat wave is slowing down, but a lot of rain is predicted?

[기자]

Looking at satellite images, Typhoon Kanun is currently passing through southern Kyushu, Japan.

In the meantime, I’ve been moving east, and I’m heading north to the Korean Peninsula.

Tomorrow, it was predicted to pass the western sea of Kyushu, Japan, and land on the southern coast on Thursday morning the day after tomorrow.

And then I’ll head north to the central inland.

It was predicted that the strength would not weaken significantly as it moved north and would rise while maintaining the power of the ‘river’.

Right now, Jeju Island is expected to be ‘directly affected’ by the typhoon tomorrow afternoon and the southern coast from tomorrow night.

The heat wave, which has been going on for more than two weeks due to the influence of Kanun, will slow down for a while, but strong rain and wind are predicted.

Heavy rain is predicted from tomorrow to Friday, mainly in the Yeongdong and Yeongnam areas of Gangwon.

In Yeongdong, Gangwon, there will be places where it rains as much as 600mm or more, 400mm in the inland west of Gyeongnam, and more than 300mm in the southern coast of Jeonnam and the inland eastern Honam.

It seems that there will be places where more than 150mm of rain pours in the metropolitan area.

Very heavy torrential rains are also expected.

In Yeongdong, Gangwon-do, there will be places where very strong rains of up to 100 mm per hour are pouring.

In other areas, there will be places where strong rain of 30 to 60 mm per hour falls.

The wind will be very strong.

In the Yeongnam coastal area, very strong winds of around 40m per second will be concentrated.

Strong winds of around 20 to 30 meters per second will blow across the country.

If it is more than 20 meters per second, it is difficult to stand in one place, and signs can be blown away.

If it is more than 30 meters per second, it is the power that roadside trees can be pulled out.

Before being affected by a typhoon, it is necessary to inspect facilities in areas where strong winds are predicted, and to inspect vulnerable areas such as flooding or soil leakage in advance.

So far, the Disaster Media Center has delivered.
