In the city of Jaén in southern Spain, 40 degrees was measured on Friday, the warmest ever recorded here in May.
At the same time, 41 degrees were measured in the region of Andalucía. The only probable explanation for the heat wave was climate change, a spokesman for the Meteorological Institute Aemet told the newspaper El Páis.
It has also been extremely hot in Portugal, France and Germany. French meteorologists expect that the average temperature in May will be the highest this month since the measurements began, writes the Washington Post.
Heat records were also broken in Germany, where the heat is said to have been a contributing factor to the storm and tornadoes that hit the country on Friday. More than 50 people were injured, and one man died in an accident related to the storm.
The heat wave hit Europe at the same time as it has been extremely hot also in the eastern part of the United States.
