“Untamed Bird”

“Untamed bird” is the twelfth book of Zane Zusta. She started her career as a writer eight years ago with internationally acclaimed children’s books about the owl Ucipuci. She writes for both children and adults. She is the author of the popular psychological books “Cockroaches in my head”, “Cockroaches in your head”.

So what is her latest book about? Zane Zusta gives the key already in the book’s introduction, emphasizing that it is a tribute to all those little boys and girls who grew up to be great husbands and wives without a father, but who longed for him all their lives.

Knowing how many such people there are in Latvia, it is quite safe to say that it will be very easy for them to identify with the main character of the book, Linda.

The book traces Linda’s life from childhood to about 40, and for as long as she can remember, she has always longed for the father she never had. Of course, longing is also mixed with a very wide range of other feelings, heartache – to see that other children have fathers, anger that her father was not important to her, also with a huge amount of all kinds of imaginative scenes, what the father could look like, what would happen if they would meet

Linda has a mother, they have a close relationship, but the mother chooses not to tell anything about the father, and there is a reason for that. Only once in her childhood, when Linda comes home from school, her mother is teary-eyed and tells her that Linda’s father has just arrived. Linda doesn’t get to meet him, but as a memory for the rest of her life, she gets a purple toy bunny brought by her father. When Linda is almost 40 years old, something unexpected happens and completely shakes her life – her father invites her to meet him through a letter. As a period of reflection, he gives a week, realizing that for this meeting they both have to prepare.

How this meeting takes place – of course, I’ll leave it to intrigue, but I’ll be honest, I was surprised who turned out to be Linda’s father.

Although this longing for a father is the main thread of the book, it also has many layers of other messages, and somehow the aftertaste after reading this work remains very warm and heartfelt. What is the main character Linda herself like.

“Winged journey in European architecture”

The visually expressive and witty book “Winged journey in European architecture” was created by two authors – architecture, art and culture journalist Agnese Čivle and designer, design teacher Daina ħe. The book is an illustrative guide to the history of European architectural styles, a truly excellent source of knowledge and inspiration for future architects.

Readers are led on a journey through different times and styles by two main characters – the curious Bird and the knowledgeable Architect, who invite us to look at architecture in an open, thoughtful and playful way. The journey begins with the Renaissance, leads through the luxury of the Baroque, the elegance of the Classicism and so on to contemporary architecture. It is represented by such modern wonders as, for example, the “Kunsthaus” museum in Graz, the “Casa de Musica” or House of Music in Porto, the Reykjavík concert hall “Harpa” and others. Each building has passionate conversations between the two main characters. For example, when the curious Bird sees the “Kunsthaus” museum in Graz, he asks the knowledgeable Architect – what is this giant impenetrable caterpillar in the middle of the city? The architect replies that this building has indeed been called all kinds of names, including a whale, a baby hippopotamus and an alien. Rumor has it that the first idea for it came from the architect Colin Fournier, when he carved a bar of soap with a knife, letting it slip out of his wet hands several times.

In the end, both of them come to the conclusion that it is a very miraculous building in general, and when hundreds of light bulbs are lit on its facade in the dark, it resembles a shining worm. Such and similar dialogues can also be read about other buildings discussed in the book.

Special emphasis should be placed on the book’s illustrations, which are very attractive and draw attention to both the architectural details of the buildings and the overall picture, which are complemented by imaginative associative moments.
