Healthy lifestyle important to prevent diabetes

Today World Diabetes Day (WDD) is held. This day, which is annually on the 14th day in November, was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat from diabetes. WDD is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign and aims to promote worldwide the importance of coordinated action to address diabetes as a critical global health problem.

Diabetes, especially Diabetes type-2, is one of the most common NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases = chronic diseases) in the world, including in Suriname, the Ministry of Health reports. The most important factors that cause diabetes are an unhealthy diet (excessive use of sugar, salt and fat) / overweight, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and little or no physical activity. An important factor that we often overlook is stress.

There is an association between obesity, waist circumference and elevated blood glucose levels. Children in Suriname also have elevated blood glucose levels (diabetes). Since almost all are behavioral risk factors and we can control it ourselves, diabetes is a chronic disease that can be well controlled with the right guidance.

The theme of World Diabetes Day 2020 is ‘The Nurse and Diabetes’ (‘The Nurse and Diabetes’). The campaign aims to raise awareness about the critical role nurses play in supporting people with diabetes.

Nurses do an excellent job of supporting people with a variety of health conditions. People living with diabetes or at risk of developing the condition also need their support. As the number of people with diabetes continues to rise around the world, the role of nurses and other healthcare support staff is increasingly important in managing the impact of the condition.

It is therefore vital that we invest in the education and training of our nurses and health workers. With the right expertise, nurses can make a difference for people with diabetes.

Try to prevent diabetes as much as possible by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making the right dietary choices such as moderate use of salt, sugar and fat, consuming enough vegetables, fruit and water, exercising, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco . Have your blood sugar measured regularly, because only then can you start looking for help and guidance.
