Health workers feel mocked with bonus offered by Guaidó

Caracas.- A little more than three months after the president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, promised with “fanfare and saucers” economic support for workers in the Venezuelan public health sector, in gratitude for facing the pandemic unleashed by the coronavirus, what has been offered by the parliamentarian has not been effective.

This was questioned this Friday by the nurse Gréicida Luna, from the Institute of Prevention and Social Assistance for the Staff of the Ministry of Education (Ipasme) and the union leader Daniel Hernández, from the Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Hospital, located in Los Magallanes de Catia.

Hernández reported that when deputy Juan Guaidó announced the delivery to all health workers of a dollarized contribution for a period of three months, his cabinet did not yet have the funds to make this payment.

He also recalled that that same day the leader of the parliament, recognized by more than 50 countries as the president in charge, said that “this aid would take only a couple of weeks to reach the workers, without providing further references.”

The union member, who takes the count to the letter of what was promised by Guaidó, added that “after a few days the first surprise stunned several health workers: although everyone expected this money, some had even received threats from from their superiors before the possibility of applying to receive this contribution, the novelty was that not all the personnel who work in the public health sector would receive these funds. “

“Yes, and although it was not clarified from the beginning, the $ 100 to be delivered for a period of three months would be destined only for 45,000 health sector workers. The priority to receive this money would be those who are in the emergency areas of hospitals type III, IV and some outpatient clinics, those designated as sentinel centers to deal with coronavirus cases, “Hernández said with annoying air.

In short, only those personnel who are directly exposed to patients with covid-19 will receive this benefit, as detailed at the time by the Commission of Health Experts to Cope with the Pandemic, designated by the National Assembly and the interim government, “he said.

Finally, he assured that “three months after the announcement, not a single worker has received this money that they so eagerly expected.

For her part, the nurse Greicida Luna, refers that with the breach of the announcement it is only evident that from the AN it is also “playing with the feelings of Venezuelans, with the need of the workers.” In her opinion, this money “was not enough for everything Venezuelans live through,” but for her it was enough to mitigate her situation a little.

Luna works as a nurse at the headquarters of the Institute of Prevention and Social Assistance for the Staff of the Ministry of Education (Ipasme), where dozens of people arrive daily in search of hospital help. He believes that if health sector workers were paid a living wage that was commensurate with the cost of the basic family basket, “no one would have to come to offer us money, and worse, we would not fall for it.”

For her, this wait has become a mockery and more when more than 20 health workers have died from the coronavirus in the country, according to reports from the NGO Médicos Unidos de Venezuela.

As you will remember, it was on June 25 when the deputy and president of the Finance Commission of the National Assembly, Alfonso Marquina, announced that finally the ad hoc board of the Central Bank of Venezuela had authorized the necessary loan (80 million dollars) “To start the Liberation Fund approved by the AN at the beginning of the year.”
