Health: Only one dose of vaccine would be needed for adolescents

Vaccination opens to children and adolescents from June 15. However, doctors believe that only one dose would be necessary for this very specific audience.

It’s their turn. From June 15, adolescents and children will be able to be vaccinated. A decision announced on June 2 by President Emmanuel Macron which was confirmed in the wake of the High Authority for Health (HAS). A HAS which recommends vaccinating adolescents in stages and which, at the same time, recommends giving only one injection to people who have already been infected with the coronavirus.

For adolescents, much less tested than adults and mostly endowed with a more resistant immune system, this second recommendation raises questions about the relevance of injecting them with two doses of vaccine. Since more than 80% of patients are asymptomatic or quasi-asymptomatic, it is quite possible that young people could have contracted the coronavirus without even realizing it.

It remains to be seen whether it is appropriate to screen adolescents, by means of a serological test, before any injection to determine whether they have been infected. The HAD highlights the possibility of carrying out rapid diagnostic orientation tests (TROD), a blood sample from the fingertip giving a result after fifteen minutes, to be certain of the situation. Faced with this proposal, caregivers remain more mixed.

Maximum protection for teens

Doctor Reuben Veerapen, if he says he is convinced of the need and the relevance of vaccinating this age group which could be ” protected with 100% efficiency thanks to vaccines ”, remains more dubious about the imperative need to appeal to these TRODs. ” The immune system ofs adolescents perform better, confirms the latter. Their “plant” is functioning properly and they don’t need two doses to boost this immunity.

Asking parents to have their children vaccinated twice could even be counterproductive as it might make some who hesitate ” are wondering about the excessive side effects caused by vaccines. ” If the passage by the unidose is advised by Doctor Veerapen, vice-president of the order on the island, he insists however on the collective dimension of this adolescent vaccination. ” Vaccinating the youngest can also protect the elderly and limit the spread of the epidemic. Even if there can be serious forms in the youngest, it is not a public at risk. But vaccination is a selfless act. ” An altruism that will have the opportunity to express itself within 10 days with the extension of this vaccination campaign to all Reunionese.
