They say the new variants could keep COVID circulation at high levels for months to come, possibly into winter.
The CDC says the new variants accounted for up to 7% of new infections in the country as of the end of May.
A Columbia University professor says many people will get sick in the coming months if there are no improved vaccines or boosters.
