He would have died after drinking too much water

An investigation was opened earlier this week in the southwest of France after the suspicious death of a man.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the victim would have succumbed to the Cadillac hospital, in Gironde, on Monday, after having consumed too much water.

The Langon-Toulenne gendarmerie was tasked with shedding light on this story while an autopsy was requested, report The Republican South-Gironde.

The man in question is said to have been the victim of potomania, a mental health problem that causes the person to drink irrepressibly.

People with this condition can consume several liters of fluid, most often water.

Drinking too much water is not good for the body which cannot assimilate the amount of fluid. The cells are too hydrated and there is not enough salt in the blood.

Most often, cerebral edema is created, leading to serious consequences for the patient, even death.

In Quebec, a 47-year-old man from Drummondville was died in the same circumstances in 2016.

Coroner Yvon Garneau then pointed out that there had only been three cases of the same type in Quebec in 10 years.
